On August 28, Mr. Lee, the CEO of Haru Invest, was stabbed while attending a court session for a major fraud case involving $826 million. The incident occurred at Seoul Southern District Court during the eighth trial related to the case.
The stabbing happened at approximately 2:20 PM in Courtroom No. 306. The attacker, identified as Mr. Kang, a man in his 40s, was one of the victims of the fraud perpetrated by Haru Invest. Kang had smuggled a 5cm knife into the courtroom. During the proceedings, he suddenly attacked Mr. Lee, stabbing him multiple times in the neck.
Mr. Lee was in the defendant’s seat when the assault took place. The attack caused significant bleeding, and a large bloodstain was left on the courtroom floor. Court security quickly subdued Mr. Kang, and Mr. Lee was transported to the hospital by ambulance at 2:43 PM, with his clothing stained with blood.
The fraud case revolves around Haru Invest and Del Rio, with issues concerning the suspension of deposits and withdrawals starting in June 2023. Mr. Lee was detained in February 2024 and charged under the Aggravated Punishment Act for Certain Crimes. He was granted bail in July but remained under legal scrutiny as the case continued to develop.
Mr. Kang was immediately detained by police officers from Seoul Yangcheon Police Station. He is now under investigation for the attack on Mr. Lee. The stabbing highlights the high tension and emotional volatility associated with significant financial fraud cases.
